Why Redacting Your Bank Statement is Smart

When a landlord asks for proof of income, or a visa application requires three months of bank statements, they need to verify your balance and transaction history — they do not need your full account number, routing number, or your bank's internal customer ID.

Carefully brush over every instance of your account number. These usually appear in the page header, footer, and sometimes in individual transaction rows. The redaction is permanent black — not just a color overlay.

Export and verify

Click Export PDF. Open the downloaded file and verify the redacted areas are solid black — try selecting the text in that region to confirm it can't be copied. Then send it safely.

Important: Use the verification step. After exporting, open the PDF in your browser or Adobe Reader and try to click/select the redacted areas. If any text is selectable, the redaction wasn't applied correctly. SignPDF's redaction removes the underlying text data, so this should always pass.

Common Scenarios

Apartment rental applications

Most landlords ask for 2–3 months of bank statements to verify income. Redact your account and routing numbers, leaving your name, statement dates, deposits, and closing balances visible. This is standard practice and no legitimate landlord will reject a redacted statement.

Visa and immigration applications

Schengen, US, UK, and Canadian visa applications often require bank statements. Consulates and embassies need to see your balance and cash flow — they do not need your full account number. Redact accordingly and include your bank's letterhead/header intact.

Mortgage and loan applications

Lenders verify income and assets. When submitting through third-party platforms, redact the account number before uploading. If the lender explicitly requires full account numbers (for direct deposit verification), provide a separate voided check instead.

Freelance proof of income

Clients or platforms that require proof of income can see your statement deposits without needing your banking credentials. Redact everything except your name, dates, and deposit transactions.
